Are you experiencing cognitive problems with PBC?

Brain fog is a common symptom in people with PBC, affecting 30-50% of those living with the condition. It can make daily activities more challenging and impact quality of life.

Common symptoms include:
* Trouble focusing or concentrating
* Forgetfulness and memory issues
* Difficulty finding the right words
* Feeling mentally exhausted
* Thinking or reacting more slowly than usual
* Losing your train of thought

Many myPBCteam members describe feeling embarrassed when they forget simple words mid-conversation or worry about making mistakes in daily tasks. PBC can cause brain fog through several mechanisms. Fatigue and cognitive issues often occur together in PBC, linked to changes in the brain and nervous system that can appear as early as six months after diagnosis.

Imbalances in neurosteroids (brain chemicals) may contribute to memory problems and fatigue. In advanced PBC with cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy can cause more severe cognitive dysfunction. Some PBC medications may also cause brain fog as a side effect.

To manage cognitive problems, consider:
* Working with your doctor on PBC medications to improve liver function
* Eating a healthy diet and exercising daily
* Getting adequate sleep
* Doing cognitive exercises like puzzles or learning new skills
* Taking breaks to avoid mental fatigue
* Using notes to remember important information

Talk to your healthcare provider about your symptoms so you can work together on the right approach for you.
