Ursodiol has three powers 1) Displace:It dilutes bile and makes it less damaging by removing toxins 2) Flush : Stimulates healthy bile flow and flushes out of bile ducts.
3) protects liver cell death flushing toxic bile acid. It slows the process.
It is a lifetime drug. Your Doctor may change the dose if needed.
Watch TC Hale on u tube talk about bile flow. He talks about food, beet flow, foods that help keep the bile flowing and foods that can clog and thicken.

Is there a risk of medical complications from taking ursodiol for 14 years?

Ursodiol is generally considered safe for long-term use in treating PBC. It's designed to be taken continuously to help protect your liver and slow disease progression. Many people take it for years or even decades as part of their ongoing treatment plan.

The most common side effects include:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Back pain

These side effects can occur at any time during treatment, but ursodiol doesn't typically cause new complications simply from being used long-term.

That said, researchers are still studying its long-term safety and effects. If you're experiencing new or worsening symptoms after 14 years on the medication, it's important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether any issues are related to the medication, your PBC progression, or other factors.

Your doctor may also want to monitor your liver function regularly to ensure the medication continues working effectively for you.

I have been on it since 1992 and it’s part of my life and by that I mean I have no side effects and will be on it for the rest of my life.
