Diagnosed with pbc lupus and sojerns and have to lose weight. Doctor said gpl 1 shot has never been tested with the pbc. Has anyone ever had shot with pbc? Complications?
If you clean up your diet you may watch pounds fall off naturally! Reduce most carbs, eat all berries eat hard cheese, drink only water, no soda or diet soda, have your largest meal earlier, pump up protein, fruits that end in Berry are beneficial, only eat during a 4 Hour window, after that hydrate with water, it's pretty easy to do and results are perm unlike drugs were you will surely gain it all back once they are discontinued! I also have 0 instant food in this house, if you want it you must make it fresh!! Your A1c will thank you,and the weight loss you did on your own has no side effects, I too have struggled, even 10 lbs make a difference!! The less carbs you consume the less you will crave them! You can actually make chips from park cheese which is a good cheese to eat, but salty so eat just a few. Water intake when hungry is key, many times we are not really hungry it's thirst!! Good luck which ever way you go!!!
I have PBC, type II diabetes and Graves Disease. I am 75. I was diagnosed 10 years ago. My doctor encouraged me to go on Mounjaro. In studies, it actually helps your liver heal. However, I do have side effects from the Mounjaro such as Diarrhea. I've lost 30 lbs and that helps. I've recently had an MRI at Mt. Sinai and my doctor was quite impressed with the status of my liver.
I think we will see ALOT of information come to light in the future about liver status and the GLP-1 medications. Tirzepatide has been shown to reduce inflammation and is now being studied in inflammation based diagnoses such as endometriosis (in microdoses, not standard weight loss doses). There are plenty of anecdotal evidence in individuals with RA or other inflammatory diseases that the Tirzepatide helps but we will have to wait to see studies come out in order to determine their true effectiveness.
GLPs can cause cholestasis which would have a negative impact on our diagnosis but again this is generally related to high weight loss and high levels of fat trying to move through one’s liver once.
Worth having a conversation with your hepatologist. But those without high levels of knowledge in this disease will probably defer based on lack of evidence.
Here’s a non science based opinion piece.

Hi, I was on GLP-1 (Oz) before I was diagnosed. I take it for diabetes. I have lost 35 lbs in over two years. Both my PCP and Liver Specialist are aware and encourage me to continue taking it to keep my weight down. I was slightly more nauseous when I started taking URSO, but it calmed down after a few weeks. I have felt better because I feel “lighter” and less pressure on my joints etc. I work out regularly, walk, weights, bike, yoga…. And eat much better. I drink a lot of water, no alcohol which also helps to feel lighter.
I hope this helps.
Managing weight with PBC, lupus, and Sjögren's is genuinely complex, and your doctor is right to flag that GLP-1 medications haven't been well-studied in people with PBC. Since PBC already affects liver function, any new medication needs careful consideration because the liver processes most drugs.
