A hemoglobin level of 9.6 g/dL is considered moderately anemic. Normal hemoglobin levels are typically around 12–16 g/dL for women and 13.5–17.5 g/dL for men, so 9.6 is noticeably below the normal range.

It's really important to share this result with your doctor as soon as possible so they can investigate the cause and recommend next steps. For people with PBC, anemia can sometimes be linked to a complication called portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG). This happens when pressure builds up in the portal vein of the liver, causing blood to reroute through other veins in the stomach lining. Those veins can leak, leading to blood loss and iron-deficiency anemia.

Anemia can also make the fatigue that often comes with PBC feel significantly worse, so getting it properly assessed and treated can make a real difference to how you feel day to day.

A few things worth discussing with your doctor:

- What is causing the anemia (iron deficiency, PHG, or something else)?
- Whether iron supplementation or other treatments are appropriate
- How this might be affecting your PBC management overall

It never hurts to ask your nurse what they think you should do. Hope you find the answers you need.
