Members overwhelmingly agreed that a liver biopsy is the primary method for determining PBC stage, as it reveals the extent of fibrosis and liver damage, though some also mentioned FibroScan as a helpful tool and emphasized the importance of tracking MELD scores to monitor overall liver health. Several members shared their personal staging journeys, describing how initial biopsies, imaging like CT scans and ultrasounds, and changes in symptoms or liver enzyme levels led to stage reassessments and further testing. A recurring theme was the critical need to work with knowledgeable specialists like hepatologists who understand PBC, as some members expressed frustration with gastroenterologists who lacked expertise in the disease.
