I was on a med for high cholesterol prior to being treated for PBC. I was instructed to stop taking that medication. Yet cholesterol is the enemy of the bile ducts and of course my heart. So, is there a med I can take or is this also needing stricter diet control.
Hi Todd, I take Fenofibrate for PBC, but it is also a drug that helps with cholesterol. My liver doctor at UCLA had me start it since it also helps with PBC. I started with 54mg that I take at night. My total cholesterol number looks high, but the separate numbers show that my good is high and the bad is low. Hope this information helps.
I take rosuvastatin 5mg. So its a low does. Both my GP and liver nurse practitioner Jackie are good with this med and dose. I can even go up to 10mg safely if needed. I don’t have any side effects from it so far so good.

I was taking a statin and stopped when I was diagnosed. My primary dr wants me back on a statin but I don't want to take one. I had severe muscle spasm while on statins. My gastroenterologist said a statin would be okay but I am fearful of further liver damage. I have researched non statins, after 2 months of requesting my insurance approved Praluent. After insurance the cost will be $482.00 a month and I cant afford that. I have an appointment at Cleveland Clinic in July and hoping to get some answers to my questions.
