What can you take for bloating and gas with PBC?
There are several options that may help relieve bloating and gas:
Over-the-counter options:
- Digestive enzymes (taken with meals to help break down lactose and certain carbohydrates)
- Gas relief medications
- Magnesium for occasional constipation
- Peppermint oil as a natural remedy
- Probiotics to boost healthy gut bacteria
Prescription options:
If you have bacterial overgrowth in your digestive system, your doctor may recommend antibiotics to clear it out.
Lifestyle approaches:
- Keep a food diary to identify trigger foods (common culprits include sugar, dairy, carbonated drinks, fried foods, and high-fiber foods)
- Exercise regularly to help move gas through your system
- Eat smaller portions and chew thoroughly
- Avoid drinking through straws and chewing gum, which can cause you to swallow more air
It's important to talk with your doctor about persistent bloating, as it can sometimes be related to PBC complications or medication side effects. A gastroenterologist can help evaluate your symptoms and recommend the best treatment approach for your situation.

PBC and Bloating: How To Relieve Gas
January 15
I take (rarely) wind-settlers if bloating gets really bad and painful but usually I drink mint and/or chamomile tea and lie down on my left side. I also found that bloating/gas is worse when I eat a high fat meal - especially saturated fat - or a big meal. I take digestive enzymes, probiotics, prebiotics and post biotics in food form and sometimes as supplements. I combine it with low fat natural yogurt, flavonoids and calcium/magnesium - apparently gut mictobiome love that. Otherwise, better out then in. ;)
