How Might CoQ10 Help with PBC?

1 Fighting CoQ10 Deficiency
Studies published in journals like Hepatology show that patients with untreated PBC often have a severe deficiency in plasma CoQ10 levels. This drop happens because toxic bile acids build up in the liver and disrupt normal metabolic processes. Taking a supplement can help restore these… read more

Members explored whether CoQ10 helps with PBC symptoms like fatigue and itching, sharing both personal experiences and research findings. Several members noted taking CoQ10 themselves, with one sharing a striking improvement in their partner's gum health after just one month, while others flagged that the key studies are older and have small sample sizes. A recurring theme was the need for more research, balanced by an encouraging update from Professor David Jones at a PBC Foundation conference, who said CoQ10 helps a little and suggested a 100mg dose.

Update - PBC Foundation pbc medical specialist Dr Martin Weltman said no evidence to support CoQ10 as beneficial.

Both myself and my partner are taking CoQ10. He has had ongoing peridontial/gum issues for the last 3 years with no resolution. I found a couple of studies linking CoQ10 administration (200mg over 12 weeks) to improved gum/peridontal health. One month after using the CoQ10 his gums are the best that they've ever been (no more abscesses, bleeding while flossing, inflammation, etc). It's wild how quickly that started. I did have him draw a baseline prior to supplementation and in the US he was within conventional "normal" values however functional medicine providers want you to be higher. It is a master antioxidant that also supports mitochondrial health and I think there are more we don't know about it. It was studied extensively in cardiac health as Vicki said but it also has implications for many other settings.
