Cirrhosis can develop as PBC progresses over time. The liver tries to heal damaged tissue by replacing it with scar tissue, and over time that scarring can interfere with how the liver works — that's cirrhosis.
Some symptoms to be aware of if you have both conditions include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites)
- Swelling in the feet, ankles, and legs
- Confusion or difficulty concentrating
PBC can take 15 to 20 years to reach its later stages, so the timeline really varies from person to person. Some people live with both PBC and cirrhosis for many years.
The most important thing is staying closely connected with your liver specialist. Regular monitoring helps catch any changes early and keeps your care on track.
