That dull aching under the right ribs is a really common experience for people with PBC, and yes, it could very well be a flare-up. The liver sits just below the right rib cage, and inflammation from PBC can cause exactly that kind of dull, achy discomfort in that area.
Since it's been going on for two weeks, it's worth checking in with your doctor. Pain that persists like this should be reported, especially if it's new or getting worse. A few things to watch for alongside the aching that might suggest a flare-up is happening:
- Increased itchy skin
- Unusual fatigue
- Swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
- Fluid buildup in your abdomen
- Pain that spreads to your back or shoulder blades
One myPBCteam member described something very similar — a dull pain and hardening feeling in the liver area, especially when eating.
If any of these additional symptoms appear, or if the pain sharpens or intensifies, don't wait — reach out to your healthcare provider sooner rather than later.

Hi I had this and my consultant arranged an ultrasound. He suspected gallstones and turns out he was right, I have two! Might be worth checking with your consultant just in case 🙂
