They think there might be a link with post-viral inflammatory surges (cytokines like TNF-α and IFN-γ) leading to new-onset PBC / PBC + AIH after recovering from a COVID-19 infection.

COvID can trigger something that functional medicine providers call CIRS (or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome). It’s not well recognized in the conventional medicine world but knowing that it can be a precursor to many things that can be heavily influenced by inflammation (cancer, autoimmune diseases, etc) it makes a lot of sense. I have met a few women with autoimmune diseases that had previous Mold Toxicity, COVID, Lyme disease, etc that subsequently developed autoimmune diseases. Their bodies were overwhelmed during those inflammatory stages that they started attacking itself.

There is so much that we don’t understand about COVID. I think it might be one of the great health challenges we face in our generations.

Pippa, I have often wondered about the Covid connection. I had Covid 4 times and can't recall having a UTI in the last 60 years! After Covid, my liver panel test began to change and after a year of test to try to figure out what was wrong I was finally diagnosed in late 2023 by a mitrochondrial DNA test.

I definitely suspect it was my trigger. I had Covid in 21, 22, 23 and 24. After my 22 infection I experienced six months of extreme fatigue, and regular sudden onsets of grey skin and puffy face and sudden fatigue. I was never quite the same again after that. After 24 infection that same cycle happened again, investigations found elevated liver enzymes in June 25 and then I was diagnosed in March 26.

I absolutely believe Covid triggered my PBC + AIH, I stayed sick, every week I had horrible colds, flu, Covid and I was working in a PreK classroom, all my students were sick so I continued to get reinfected and no one cared about my health, no one.
