Stress can have a real impact on how PBC symptoms feel and how well treatment works. Managing stress isn't just about feeling better emotionally — it may actually support your treatment outcomes.

Here are some practical ways to reduce stress with PBC:

- Rest when you need to — fatigue is very common with PBC, so honoring your body's signals matters
- Do something nice for yourself — spa nights at home, face masks, foot soaks, whatever helps you unwind
- Try relaxing therapies — massage, acupuncture, or ozone therapy can be soothing
- Take short naps — even power naps during the day can help manage fatigue-related stress
- Reduce unnecessary stressors — where possible, simplify your commitments

One myPBCteam member who was balancing work and raising a child shared that eliminating stress from her life was key, noting that stress could interfere with how well treatment works. Fatigue — one of the most common PBC symptoms — can be made worse by stress, creating a difficult cycle. Getting enough rest, light exercise, and practicing good sleep habits can help break that cycle and improve your energy levels.

Always check in with your hepatologist if stress feels unmanageable, as they can help tailor strategies to your specific situation.

I haven't had recent labs or a Fibroscan since May, but since I decided to take my Social Security in August, I feel 1,000 % better!! I turn 65 in Dec. However, at my last appt in May it was showing an elevation in Stage 3 Fibrosis, and my ask phos is still VERY high. I'll be curious to see my next results. I'm getting labs in Oct and see my PCP & Hepatologist early Nov. The only symptoms I have are insomnia, and swelling in my feet that comes & goes. Suddenly I have a LOT of veins that have appeared in my legs. When I touch the side of my legs it's like touching a bruise. It's a brand new symptom, so, we'll see what this ends up being!! Never a dull moment! 😉
