Overview
Artificial tears are recommended for the symptom of dry eyes associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Over-the-counter artificial tears are available without a prescription, and it’s important to note that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for all types of dry eyes. You might need to experiment with various options before you find the most effective brand for your specific condition. Some examples of artificial tears that you can buy without a prescription are Bausch & Lomb Advanced Eye Relief, Alcon Tears, Blink Tears, GenTeal Tears, Refresh Tears, Systane Complete, TheraTears, and Visine Dry Eye Relief.

Artificial tears are believed to work by adding more water to your tears or strengthening the lipid portion of your tears. This lipid layer acts as a protective barrier, preventing tears from evaporating too quickly, which helps ease dryness and maintain the cornea’s moisture.

How do I take them?
Artificial tears come in either bottles or tubes, as a liquid solution, gel, or ointment. When using artificial tears, follow the instructions on the package or from your doctor.

Typically, you’ll apply a small drop (or a strip for ointments) to the affected eye as needed, usually every few hours. Make sure your hands are clean before applying, and avoid touching the bottle or tube tip to prevent contamination. If you wear contact lenses, ask your eye doctor whether to take them out before using artificial tears. If you experience any side effects or if your symptoms continue, reach out to your doctor for guidance.

Side effects
Common side effects of artificial tears include mild eye burning or irritation, itching or redness of the eyes, watery eyes, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light.

Rare but serious side effects listed for artificial tears include severe burning, stinging, or eye irritation; eye pain; or vision changes.
