Members shared varied approaches to drinking alcohol while managing PBC, with responses ranging from occasional margaritas or wine to complete abstinence based on their doctor's advice. Several members reported having a couple of drinks weekly without negative effects on their liver numbers, with one noting alcohol may have an inverse relationship with PBC, while others described doctors recommending strict avoidance, citing research that no amount of alcohol is truly safe for liver health. A recurring theme was listening to your own body and doctor's guidance, as individual tolerance and medical circumstances differ widely, with some finding moderation works well while others feel safer avoiding it entirely.

I do have a few drinks 2 or 3 times a week. My numbers went up last dr appointment, but he did not seem concerned. I feel ok and so far so good.

I have 2 drinks at night most nights . All my numbers are great so I don’t want to change my chemistry . I have read that alcohol has an inverse relationship with pbc. I eat better than ever and exercise most everyday . This relaxes me and I sleep well 8 to 10 hours .

When I asked my internal medicine doctor if it’s safe for me to have the occasional drink, he said alcohol is not safe. He told me about the 2020 Global Burden of Disease study published in The Lancet that concluded that NO amount of alcohol consumption is safe for health. Any amount of alcohol carries health risks. The World Health Organization also published a statement in The Lancet Public Health, stating that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption that does not affect health.
