How common is PBC in the UK population?

Globally, PBC affects between 7 to 940 people per million population. The wide range exists because PBC prevalence varies significantly between different populations and regions worldwide. PBC is most common among people of Northern European descent, which includes the UK population. The condition affects women more frequently than men, with current estimates showing around 65 per 100,000 women develop PBC. The condition is much rarer in men.

People who have a close family member with PBC are 11 times more likely to develop the condition compared to those without a family history. This risk is particularly high for daughters of women diagnosed with PBC.
