Hello Jenny, Definitely use caution with Immodium and other OTC products. The liver metabolizes many medications, including Immodium (loperamide). The liver also rids (or clears) toxins and drug metabolites from the body. When the liver is essentially 'under attack' such as by PBC, any resultant insult (damage/dysfunction) can disrupt this normal function. The metabolites/toxins can accumulate and cause some havoc within the body. In addition, Immodium can affect secretions from the gall bladder and pancreas. Should there be liver dysfunction, loperamide metabolites can even affect the brain, causing confusion and additional entities. Your physician has a grasp on your Stage and degree of Liver involvement. It would be prudent to consult with them. Wishing You All the Best!
I have taken modicum my whole life. Then was diagnosed with PBC. The diarrhea was worse. Took my Immodium. Started getting scary symptoms. Can't take them anymore for my body. But my GI encouraged me to take it. So I just had to change brands. I bought an off brand and not having any problems.
