Bloating is a common and frustrating symptom for people living with PBC. The good news is there are several approaches — both lifestyle-based and medicinal — that can help.

Here are some things that may provide relief:

- Over-the-counter gas relief medications can help ease bloating and discomfort
- Digestive enzymes (taken with meals) help break down certain foods that trigger gas
- Probiotics can support healthy gut bacteria and improve digestion
- Magnesium and peppermint oil are natural options for occasional constipation-related bloating
- Antibiotics may be recommended by your doctor if an overgrowth of unhealthy gut bacteria is contributing to the problem Lifestyle changes can also make a big difference:

- Eat smaller portions and chew slowly
- Keep a food diary to identify trigger foods (common ones include dairy, fried foods, carbonated drinks, and sugar)
- Exercise regularly to help keep digestion moving
- Avoid drinking through straws or chewing gum, as these can cause you to swallow extra air

Before cutting out entire food groups, it's worth speaking with a registered dietitian who understands PBC to make sure you're still getting the nutrition you need.
