I had hives on time on my legs. We all have an autoimmune disease. I am Celiac and am extremely sensitive to gluten, barley, wheat. Being sensitive to certain foods like melons, etc can cause hives.

PBC doesn't typically cause hives specifically, but it is very strongly associated with intense itchy skin (called pruritus), which can sometimes be mistaken for hives.

The itching happens because damaged bile ducts cause bile acids to build up in the bloodstream, which then irritate nerve endings in the skin — even without any visible rash. PBC-related skin symptoms can include:

- Intense itching — most commonly on the hands, feet, arms, and legs
- Jaundice — yellowing of the skin
- Hyperpigmentation — darkening of the skin
- Xanthomas — small yellow bumps under the skin
- Dry, cracked, or flaking skin

The itching can be so severe that some myPBCteam members have described scratching their skin until it bleeds. If the itching is bothering you, it's worth talking to your doctor. There are several options that may help, ranging from over-the-counter antihistamines to prescription medications like cholestyramine, rifampin, or opioid antagonists. Finding the right approach can take some trial and error, but relief is possible!

Went thru a time of hives. I thought it was my body's last hard fight against PBC. Eosinophils were elevated with it.
I hope you're over the hives.
