I was losing weight and was diagnosed with fatty liver disease last may. I went on a pretty strict diet and continued to lose weight but my enzyme counts and such skyrocketed from over 300 to nearly over 700 in three months. After all the scans and biopsy, I was diagnosed with PBC. Put on Urso, I stopped the mediterranean diet, which I hated. I now have a small appetite, I eat one meal a day a I am guilty of snacking on sugar in the evenings. I have in three months put on 20 pounds. I know the… read more

Members shared mixed experiences about weight gain after starting Urso for PBC, with some reporting significant gains of 20 to 30 pounds despite healthy eating and exercise, while others noticed no change at all. Several members offered practical dietary guidance, including avoiding processed foods and refined carbs, choosing healthy fats like olive oil and nuts, drinking black coffee for liver health, and managing sugar cravings with hot tea and raw honey. A recurring theme was the frustration of unexplained weight changes alongside gratitude for effective treatment, with many emphasizing the importance of sticking to liver-friendly foods to slow disease progression.

I gained weight rapidly after starting Urso. It went steadily up even though I wasn't eating more than usual. After 1 year on Urso, I had gained 30 pounds. Six months later, I seem to be holding at 30 pounds.

Black coffee is good for fatty liver. No sugar or milk. I know it is tough but it is important to stick with good fats like olive oil. A little bit of grass fed butter on whole wheat toast is tolerable. Fats in processed foods like donuts, cookies, cake is a no. Process foods like microwave meals is a no. White bread, rice and white pasta turns to sugar. Hot tea with organic raw honey helps with sugar cravings.
I have a snack bag of Brazil nuts, pine nuts , walnuts, and cashews salt free along with raisins, cranberries, dried cut up prunes, and some dark chocolate almonds.
Being in the fatty liver stage you are probably not dealing with malabsorption and malnutrition. The disease has been caught early in your case. Please research foods to stay away from to help slow the process.
Best wishes

So i read that black coffee is best for fatty liver. I was put on coffee by my Dr. Liver specialist and dietician they said milk was ok. After 2 years of this my biopsy said no sighs of fatty liver. Yay. So low fat milk as i was told to do was ok. I dont like coffee. So black was out of the question. Hope this helps anyone who feel that way too.
