A few years after diagnosis I experienced the same thing. Cool shower were torture due to my Raynauds, and so was the itching. My dr said he’d prescribe some kind of quinine, this was 23 years ago so hard to remember. Never started it, as the itching just stopped one day. Haven’t experienced it since.

I found heat in general makes my itching worse... try cooler showers... also found shaving is very irritating...

Recently, after 30 years. My scalp drives me crazy at bedtime. The only thing that seems to help is cold water. My Alk phos is up, so I’ll see what my specialist says next month. I’ve always had allergies. Hah! Plus I am old (er) now!😵‍💫😩🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes!! And if I scratch it, the itch intensifies. I could lose my mind! A cold rag placed on the area helps temporarily. I now use Cetaphil Flare up Relief Body Wash. It works, I'm afraid not to use it. If I do start to itch I now have a prescription for Cholestyramine. It's a powder. It tastes horrible.
But it works.
DO NOT TAKE BENADRYL! I was told to 'just take BENADRYL' by my doctor.
It will dry you out and make it worse.

Does itching get worse all over your body and scalp after showering with PBC cirrhosis?

Yes, severe itching all over the body is very common with PBC, especially when cirrhosis develops. About 73-81% of people with PBC experience itchy skin at some point, and for roughly 30%, it's uncomfortable enough to interfere with daily life.

The itching happens because damaged bile ducts cause bile acids to build up in your bloodstream. When these bile acids reach your skin, they trigger nerve endings that send itching signals to your brain.

Hot water from showers can make itching worse because it:
- Dries out your skin further
- Increases blood flow to the skin surface
- Can temporarily intensify the sensation of nerve endings

The itching is often most intense on your arms, legs, palms, and soles of your feet, but it can occur anywhere on your body, including your scalp.

If your itching is severe or interfering with sleep and daily activities, talk to your doctor. They may recommend treatments that specifically target this symptom, even if you're already taking medication for PBC.
