The few herbal supplements I have asked my Hepatologist about, she had said she would rather I didn't take - ashwagandha, kava kava. I am on Wellbutrin and Buspirone, with the occasional Xanax, for my anxiety and it is managing it well with no negative interaction with my liver or Ursodiol. Not sure if you want to go the pharmaceutical route.

Are herbal anti-anxiety supplements safe to take with PBC?

It's understandable that anxiety feels overwhelming, especially when managing a chronic condition like PBC. Before taking any herbal supplements for anxiety, it's really important to talk with your healthcare provider first.

Here's why caution is needed:

* All supplements carry some risks and can interact with your PBC medications
* High doses of any supplement could strain your liver
* Some herbal products may interfere with drugs you're taking for PBC or other conditions
* Your liver processes everything you take, so adding supplements without medical guidance could cause problems

Managing stress is crucial for PBC, as stress can interfere with how well your treatment works. Consider discussing these options with your doctor:

* Stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises
* Acupuncture or massage therapy
* Joining a PBC support community to connect with others who understand
* Asking your doctor about safe anxiety management options that won't harm your liver

Your healthcare team can help you find safe ways to manage anxiety that won't interfere with your PBC treatment or put extra stress on your liver. They may also check if any of your current medications could be contributing to anxiety symptoms.
