Are the dark patches on your body spreading β€” and could this be related to PBC?

Skin darkening, known as hyperpigmentation, is a recognized skin symptom of PBC. It happens because of the way PBC affects liver function and bile flow in your body. With PBC, around 40% of people experience skin-related symptoms. Beyond hyperpigmentation, these can include:

- Dry skin β€” often persistent even with moisturizing
- Itching β€” caused by excess bile salts irritating skin nerves
- Jaundice β€” yellowing of the skin
- Xanthomas β€” small yellow bumps on the skin

If the patches are spreading, it's really important to bring this up with your hepatologist or a dermatologist as soon as possible. Spreading hyperpigmentation could signal changes in your liver health or disease progression, so getting it checked promptly is key.

Managing PBC effectively β€” staying on top of treatment and regular check-ins with your doctor β€” may also help reduce some of these skin symptoms over time.
